The Old Police Station, Royston
The Old Police Station in Royston was converted into fully serviced offices by Solutions for Business in 1992, after being vacated by the Hertfordshire Police in 1988. Built in 1883 at great expense the building is a solid design, with many charming Victorian features which have been retained. The building comprised of a Magistrate's Court, a Juvenile Court, three Prison Cells, Coach House and a Police Inspector's House with six rooms. In what was an exhaustive effort all this was taken and converted into offices, keeping in mind the needs of a modern office environment.
The Magistrate's Court was converted into a large open plan office which has an airy atmosphere. Inside this you will find the original railings which were used to separate the prisoners dock and public gallery from the main court, and leads directly into the corridor with the cells. All of the cells have been converted into small offices. Each of the cells were sandblasted during the conversion to remove all traces of the previous occupants, and have been fitted with up-lighters to provide good interior lighting as they only have small windows. An interesting item left at the end of the corridor is what was the prisoner's toilet which had the chain on the outside to prevent them from trying to hang themselves! The Coach House, which when first built was used as stables and latterly as garages, has been completely renovated and the front wall removed to make a glass fronted showroom. This is where you will find the Reception and is the main shop area for Solutions For Business. The remaining rooms and the Juvenile Court were converted into offices of various sizes from large offices suitable for several people to small offices for one. Each of these offices have been fitted with electrical and telephone sockets as well as having down-lighters fitted to provide you with an airy and spacious feeling office.
